Berberine is a plant phytochemical with a broad range of biological activity, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity (Warowicka A, et al., 2020).

Berberine has shown to reduce virus replication and it targets specific interactions between the virus and its host (Warowicka A, et al., 2020).

Research has shown it inhibits the replication of herpes simplex virus, human cytomegalovirus, human papillomavirus, and human immunodeficiency virus.

In addition to that, berberine supports the immune system leading to viral clearance.

The results of laboratory studies strongly suggested that berberine may also damage the structure of bacterial cell membrane and inhibit synthesis of protein and DNA, which cause Streptococcus agalactiae bacteria to eventually die (Peng L, et al., 2015).

Berberine provides a lot of other benefits as well, reducing blood glucose levels and cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides.

There is even research showing that it reduces body mass index and waist circumference (Xiong P, et al., 2020).
