Numerous studies have been conducted on vitamin D and the benefits it provides.

This particular study investigated the association between vitamin D and the metabolic syndrome (Devaraj S, et al. 2010). The metabolic syndrome is a condition which includes elevated blood sugar, elevated cholesterol and triglycerides and also often elevated blood pressure. These individuals have insulin resistance and have usually put on weight around the waist. These biochemical changes make them more susceptible to both cardiovascular disease and diabetes as well as other chronic diseases.

The research showed that the individuals with metabolic syndrome had significantly decreased vitamin D levels compared to the ones without the metabolic syndrome.

It is also interesting that the vitamin D levels were significantly inversely correlated with fasting blood glucose.
