The participants of this research included 1002 healthy adults aged 18-65 years (Mazidi M, et al., 2021).


The after-meal effect at multiple intervals was measured for glucose, triglycerides, IL-6, and GlycA. IL-6 and GlycA are inflammatory cytokines. The meals the participants ingested were mixed-nutrient meals.


The after-meal effect between the participants varied a lot.

 


The after-meal peak triglyceride and glucose concentrations were significantly associated with GlycA.


Visceral fat (the fat surrounding our organs) and fasting triglyceride levels were most strongly associated with fasting and after-meal GlycA.


The participants triggering higher GlycA responses was found to have higher predicted cardiovascular disease risk.


This points out the importance of ingesting low glycemic index meals which helps to lower triglycerides and low grade systemic inflammation, thereby reduce the risk for chronic diseases.
